I’ve had spicy ramen in HOT. Spicy ramen restaurant in Shinbashi, Tokyo

I have recently developed a taste for spicy food, and today I went in search of spicy ramen in Tokyo.

Natsuboshi

A ramen shop in the old business district of Shinbashi, Tokyo.

The name of the restaurant is “Natsuboshi.”
There are many Chinese restaurants in Japan, but unlike authentic Chinese cuisine, the flavors of these restaurants are different from those of the real thing and more suited to Japanese tastes.

Therefore, I am searching for a restaurant that serves delicious and spicy food that is close to authentic Chinese food.

Automatic ticketing machines are still unique to Japan.

Automatic ticketing machines

Mysterious in-store menu, even though there is a ticket machine outside the restaurant. Not many menu items. Ramen noodle specialty restaurant.

Chili peppers

Chili peppers laid out on the table.

Hot Level Menu

You can choose spiciness and numbness when you order your ramen. In case you are wondering, I set both to level 3.

The spicy tantanmen

I did it. The spicy tantanmen I had been waiting for.

It wasn’t as spicy as I thought it would be. Too bad. I ate it while sweating, though. It was delicious.

Review

I visited for the first time on a Sunday afternoon. It seems there’s another branch of the same chain in Ichigaya. While many restaurants in this area (Shinbashi) are closed on weekends and holidays, I was grateful this one was open.
The Sichuan-style tantanmen comes in two varieties: “Original Blend” and “White Sesame.” I chose the former. You can select the level of spiciness and numbing sensation from three levels each (1-3), so I chose level 3 for both. True to its “Sichuan” name, it’s a delicious, authentic-style tantanmen with that signature spicy and numbing kick, achieved by combining sesame paste with chili oil and Sichuan pepper. (Note: Technically, authentic Sichuan tantanmen is usually served dry, without soup. Personally, I enjoy both dry and soup-based versions, so I won’t dwell on that point.)
